Building a Healthier Community: Promoting Physical Well-Being Through Parks and Recreation
By: Jacob Oswald, Director of Parks and Recreation
Our parks and recreation services provide essential infrastructure—parks, trails, sports facilities, and recreation centers—that offer people of all ages opportunities to engage in activities that promote physical health and enhance quality of life.
The impact of parks and recreation extends beyond maintaining spaces; we actively create and manage programs that support community wellness. This includes, or could include things like, youth and adult sports leagues, fitness classes, older adult programs, dance lessons, fun runs, and walks.
Advocating for Equity and Access
Ensuring that every community member has fair access to parks, trails, and facilities is fundamental to our work. We advocate for the development and improvement of these spaces, establishing fair permitting and fee structures so that all can participate without financial barriers. Scholarships and equipment assistance are available for those who need them thanks to the generous support(ers) of our Monticello Friends of Parks and Recreation.
Enhancing Connectivity and Safety
Accessibility is at the core of our efforts to improve parks and public spaces. We assess local parks, trails, and public spaces to identify and address barriers to access. By creating safe, connected routes to community destinations, we ensure that play areas are inclusive and accessible to everyone.
Expanding Future Possibilities
Looking ahead, our vision for parks and recreation includes broadening our reach in many ways. We aim to expand our adult programming and offer more family-friendly events that engage all ages. Hosting community activities like 5K events, swim safety weeks, and bike-to-work days will continue to encourage physical activity and strengthen community connections. Additionally, our plans include outdoor all-weather fitness equipment and a variety of inclusive physical activity programs, such as adaptive sports, outdoor recreation, and evidence-based chronic disease management initiatives.
Our ongoing investments in parks and recreation are investments in the well-being and future of our entire community. By expanding our programs and improving our facilities, we aim to strengthen the bonds within our community and ensure a healthier, more vibrant place for all. These efforts are central to making Monticello a great place to LIVE, WORK, and PLAY—where residents of all ages can thrive, stay active, and find meaningful connections.
